DURHAM – Five people were injured, one seriously, in a crash on Route 136 Monday afternoon.

Their identities were not released Monday night.

Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Sgt. James Jacques said all were riding in the same car. Four were taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland, including a passenger who suffered a “severe head injury,” Jacques said.

The driver of the Mercury Sable, which was demolished, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Jacques said none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

A news release will be issued Tuesday morning by the investigator, Deputy Travis Lovering, Jacques said.

He said the car was being driven north on Route 136, a short distance from the Freeport town line, at a “high rate of speed” when it collided with an oncoming van. It veered off the left shoulder, struck a mailbox, hit a tree and went back across the highway, landing on the side of the road, Jacques said.

Brunswick police reconstructed the accident. The highway was closed for two hours.

Jacques said “speed was definitely a factor.”

The van driver’s name was not released. The vehicle sustained minor damage.
