I have to share an interesting moment that happened recently. While I was driving in New Hampshire with a few conservative friends, an advertisement came over the radio saying that we needed to support President Bush’s Social Security plan because Congress “has already drained the coffers paying for programs.” The gist was to stop Congress and pass his program.

I laughed because it sounded like the president was saying, “Help me fight against my own party in Congress.” When I said that, my friends got very upset and said, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

I said, “Who’s been in control of Congress since 1994? Who’s responsible for the spending that’s taken place since then?”

In true “ditto-head” style, they said, “The Democrats are responsible for all the foolish spending in Congress.”

I said, “So the Republican Party is too weak and ineffective to control spending – even though they are the majority? Are you saying the Democrats tell them what to do?”

One said, “No way, baby. We got the majority because the people have spoken.”

So I restated my argument, to no avail. Obviously, everything that’s wrong is the Democrats’ fault. Illogical thinking. No wonder he got re-elected.

How about this one? How many think that the party calling for a people’s veto of the governor’s budget is going to work as hard for us to get a chance to veto the president’s budget?

I don’t see any hands.
