NEWRY – Sue L. Wight, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully, though unexpectedly at her home she loved in Newry, on April 24.

She was born on Aug. 28, 1929, in Wellsville, N.Y., the daughter of Jerry and Pearl Lewis.

In 1981, she achieved her dream of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in art from USM. She taught for a short period of time in the Dixfield School District.

She married Frederic Owen Wight of Newry, on March 2, 1957.

She was a well known artist in the area. Her passion for art can be seen in the many sketches and paintings of local landscapes. She was an exhibitor at various art shows around Maine, including the Portland Sidewalk Art Festival, the Farnsworth Art Gallery and the Bethel Art Fair. She inspired others to pursue their own artistic gifts, but none more than her own grandchildren.

She was always willing to set another place at the table and welcomed others into her home with her wonderful smile and laughter. She loved gardening, especially flowers. Her other interests included reading and observing the many species of birds that inhabited her bird feeder. She was a member of the Newry Mother’s Club, the Order of Eastern Star and a 50-year member of the grange.

She has left a loving family who will forever hold her close to their hearts. Her children are Susan Brooke-Bowie of Newry, Bill and Gail Brooke of Whitefield, Randy and Audrey Brooke of Newry, Matthew and Donna Wight of Wanachee, Wash., Tom Wight and Edith Murphy of Chelmsford, Mass. and Scott Wight of Bronx, N.Y. Her 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews will miss her love and caring ways. She is also survived by a sister, Betty Raup; and one brother, Gary Lewis of Florida.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Willis Brooks in 1955.
