RUMFORD – The Western Maine Chapter of the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine will usher in spring with its first outdoor meeting of the season at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at Bill Weston’s Tree Farm.

Maine State Forest Service Forester Merle Ring will lead a tree identification walking tour. Coffee and doughnuts will be available at 8:30 a.m. Weston’s tree farm is located on Route 2 a mile and a half south of Rumford Center village. SWOAM signs will be posted at the site.

NRA course

FRYEBURG – The Fryeburg Fish and Game Association will offer a 10-hour National Rifle Association personal protection course taught by Ian Tait of Brownfield.

The two-day course will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1, in the classroom of the Fryeburg Rescue Barn, Route 302.

Students must be at least 18 and have a valid photo ID. Cost of the course is $75 for the registrant and $65 for each family member. Since the number of students will be limited to 20, a deposit of $37.50 (or $32.50) must be paid in advance and made payable to the Fryeburg Fish and Game Association to ensure space in the course.
