CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – Department of Fish and Game officials want the public’s help in getting a handle on how many bear, deer, moose and wild turkey there should be in the state.

The department wants input on its 10-year plan for managing big game populations. Four public meetings were scheduled this week – two in Concord on Tuesday followed by two in Lancaster on Thursday.

Right now, the plan would cut New Hampshire’s moose population by 5 percent and boost the deer population by 27 percent. The bear population would not change but would be shifted to less developed areas. The wild turkey population would stay the same.

“If people think we ought to have more deer in the state, this is the time and place to come and say it,” said Steve Weber, chief of the department’s wildlife division.
