CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – The summer tourism season starts soon and the state has a plan for luring big-spenders.

The state on Tuesday launched an advertising campaign aimed at a very particular target – Philadelphia.

Tourists from Pennsylvania far outspent those from New York and Boston in 2003 – nearly 300 percent more than Boston tourists, according to New Hampshire’s Division of Travel and Tourism Development. Pennsylvania tourists outspent New Yorkers by 20 percent.

The television and print ad campaign will run in Philadelphia, Boston, New York City and Hartford, Connecticut. Travel and Tourism Director Alice DeSouza says the campaign will focus on encouraging tourists to stay longer – and leave more money behind.

“We don’t simply want to attract more people,” she said. “We’re reaching out to visitors who will stay longer and enjoy more of what New Hampshire has to offer.”

Visitors to New Hampshire spent nearly $4 billion dollars in 2004, according to the governor’s office.
