FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) – A Bridgeport woman has been charged with impersonating a dental hygienist for at least two local dentists.
Maria Calo, 27, was arrested on charges of identity theft, larceny and two counts each of impersonating a licensed dental hygienist and performing the unlicensed practice of dental hygiene.
Police said Calo stole the identity of a Bristol dental hygienist and used that woman’s credentials to work for Dr. Cary Shapoff and Dr. Adriana Torena.
Police are also investigating whether Calo also worked for other dentists in Fairfield and Bridgeport.
On March 15, police said they interviewed Calo at her home. They said she told them that she had taken dental assistant classes over the Internet and through the mail, but had not actually gotten her license.
Calo surrendered to police Friday after being told there was a warrant for her arrest. She was released on bond pending arraignment Friday in Superior Court.
Police said last July Calo had her name changed in Bridgeport Probate Court from Maria Rodriguez to Maria Calo because she claimed she had been the victim of identity theft in California.
