LOVELL – A 12-year-old Lovell boy was listed in fair condition Friday with injuries suffered when his mountain bike collided with a van Thursday on Route 5, Oxford County Deputy Josh Wyman said.

Mitchell Knox, 12, of 19 Kezar Forest Lane in Center Lovell village was flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland with head injuries, the deputy said Friday. A nursing supervisor said Knox was in fair condition Friday night.

Knox is the son of Kirby Knox of Lovell, Wyman said.

Patrick Cadigan, 46, of 5 Kezar Forest Lane in Center Lovell, was identified as the driver of the van. He was not hurt, the deputy said.

The collision occurred at 3 p.m. as Cadigan was leaving a side road and turning right onto Route 5 by the Center Lovell Market, headed north. The boy was riding on the shoulder of Route 5 to Cadigan’s right, Wyman said.

Cadigan “said that he looked left and right and didn’t see the bike on the road shoulder. He never saw the boy,” Wyman reported.

“There was no foul play involved, nor speed or alcohol and drugs. They were not a factor at all,” he added.

Fryeburg Rescue took the boy to a waiting helicopter, which flew him to Portland.

The van windshield cracked when the boy hit it with his head, Wyman said. The deputy did not know if the boy was wearing a helmet at the time. The accident remains under investigation.

Assisting Wyman were Oxford County Sheriff’s Sgt. Gary Hill and Cpl. Matthew Baker.
