EAST LIVERMORE – Valentine L. “Val” Nichols, 88, of East Livermore, died unexpectedly Friday, April 29, in the comfort of his own home on the Campground Road in East Livermore.

He was born on Feb. 1, 1917, in Livermore Falls, the youngest of 14 children to Leon and Enzy (Dakin) Nichols. He was educated in the local schoolhouse just down the road from his current home.

A U.S. Army Veteran, he served during World War II. He retired from International Paper’s Livermore Falls facility in 1974 after many years of service.

Val was a member of the Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post 3335 of Jay.

He loved to hunt, fish, ice fish, play cards with family and friends, and in most recent years, play with his four great-grandchildren. In winters past, Val could be found manning his post at Nick’s Snack Shop, a snack shack that he operated from his garage along side his family, serving snowmobilers who passed by.

He is survived by two daughters, Shirley Goding and her husband, David, of Fayette, and Sandra Thompson and her husband, Norman, of Fayette; three granddaughters, Laurie Brown of Fayette, Tanya Hood and her companion, Paul Jackman, of Fayette, and Heather Hood and her companion, Michael Scott, of East Livermore; four great-grandchildren, Brian Dubord, Cody, Avery and Ashlyn Williams; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Leroy Nichols, in 1996, and his eight brothers and five sisters.
