STANDISH – Charlie Furbush pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and strking out 13 to lead St. Joesph’s to a 4-0 victory over Thomas in Game 1 of baseball doubleheader on Saturday.

Aaron Cieslak went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Andy Exley belted a solo home run for the Monks (25-9).

In the second game, Exley went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a homer to lift St. Joe’s past Thomas 9-4.

Aaron Cieslak also homered and Derek McIntosh had two hits with an RBI and scored twice for the Monks. For Thomas, Brandon Connors batted in all four of the Monks’ runs.

Tufts notches pair

WATERVILLE – Tufts University scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning of the nightcap, all unearned, to pull out a 10-8 win, following a crushing 22-0 victory over Colby in the baseball opener on Saturday.

The Jumbos (20-8) had 19 hits in the opener, while initiating a come-from-behind win in the nightcap without the benefit of a hit. Tufts used two walks, two hit by pitches and an error to bring the three runs across in the ninth frame.

Tyler Hales had three hits, including a home run and a triple for Colby. Andy Carr and Steven Sandak both had a pair of hits for the Mules.

USM splits

GORHAM – The University of Southern Maine used a 17-hit assault in Game 1 to pound out a 12-7 victory over Plymouth State. Senior second baseman Matt Gabellieri banged out a one-out sacrifice fly in the ninth to drive home the game-winner for Plymouth State in the nightcap.

With one out in the ninth inning of Game 2, senior outfielder Derek Guimond of Lewiston worked Huskie sophomore reliever Pat Foley for a walk to set the stage for the game-winning run. Following a wild pitch, another walk, and yet another wild pitch from reliever Brandon Brewer, Gabellieri lifted a fly ball to center field to plate Guimond.

Trailing 8-2 in the fourth inning of the opener, the Panthers (8-24) posted a four-run inning to close the gap to 8-6. Two frames later, the Huskies (20-10) added to their advantage as freshman Eddie Skeffington slammed a two-run homer, and sophomore Max Arseanult followed with a solo shot.

Bates split

BRUNSWICK – Ricky Leclerc belted a grand slam in the bottom of the third to lift Bowdoin past Bates, 7-5, in a baseball doubleheader.

Bowdoin scored six runs in the the third. Nate Reid went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Brian Mahoney went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

In the second game, Adam Taranto hit a two-run homer in the third to lead Bates to a 5-4 victory over Bowdoin. (8-13). Nick Lawler homered in the fifth to give Bowdoin a 3-2 lead at that point, but in the top of the sixth, Charlie Engasser hit a solo home run for the Bobcats to tie it up at 3. Adam Worral scored the game-winning run on an error by the second baseman Lawler.

Softball

Tufts sweeps

MEDFORD, Mass. – Junior pitcher Julia Brenta pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts to carry Tufts to a 4-0 victory over Colby in Game 1 of a softball doubleheader.

With the win, Brenta improves her record to (6-0). The Jumbos were only ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth until Megan Cusick belted a two-run double to give Tufts some insurance runs.

Keene State sweeps

GORHAM – Senior pitcher Meghan McLoughlin tossed a three-hitter over nine innings and freshman pitcher Ashlee Nicholson pitched a two-hit shutout as Keene State took 4-1 and 11-0 victories over the University of Southern Maine in a softball doubleheader Saturday.

With the score tied 1-1 in the ninth inning of Game 1, freshman designated hitter Liz Mroczka started the Owl (28-6) rally with a lead-off single and then took second on a sacrifice bunt. Junior second baseman Sarah Campbell cracked a double to plate the game-winning run.

Women’s lacrosse

Keene State 12, USM 7

KEENE, N.H. – Junior Kristal Lundegaard scored four goals and earned three assists to lead Keene State to a 12-7 victory over the University of Southern Maine in women’s lacrosse action Saturday.

Five different Owl (7-6) players scored as Keene State moved out to a 5-2 halftime lead. The Huskies (4-7) closed the gap to two goals three times in the second half, the latest on a goal by sophomore Sarah Proulx of Hebron that made it 7-5 at the 18:04 mark.

Tufts 12, Bates 6

LEWISTON – Megan Doughty paced Tufts with five goals as the Jumbos closed the season with a 12-6 win over Bates College in women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

The Bobcats (7-9) were led by multi-goal performances from Molly Wager, who scored two goals, and Kat Farmer, who tallied two goals and an assist.

Liz McNamara and Katie Nickerson shared goaltending duties for Bates. McNamara made 12 saves and allowed seven goals in 42 minutes of play, while Nickerson made one save and allowed five goals in 18 minutes of action.

Colby 21, Connecticut College 14

WATERVILLE – Sarah Burlingham collected six goals and one assist to power Colby College to a 21-14 win over Connecticut College in women’s lacrosse action Saturday.

The White Mules (11-4) opened up a 7-0 lead in the first half, but the Camels (5-11) stormed back and only trailed 8-6 at halftime.

Courtney Drake and Emma Miller both had three goals and an assist for Colby. Elizabeth Ghilardi added two goals and two assists, while Allie Libby and Kelsey Neville both contributed a pair of goals and an assist.

Men’s lacrosse

Keene State 15, USM 6

GORHAM – Sophomore Sean Panora tallied four goals and an assist to lead Keene State to a 15-6 rout over the University of Southern Maine in men’s lacrosse action Saturday.

Panora and senior Eric Momnie each scored a pair of goals in the first quarter as the Owls (8-4) laid claim to a 6-3 lead after 15 minutes.

Wesleyan 12, Colby 6

WATERVILLE – Chris Jasinski had one goal and three assists to lift Wesleyan to a 12-6 victory over Colby in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Mike Vitulano and Mike Hines each had a hat trick for Wesleyan (10-4), which led 5-1 at the half.

Bowdoin 8, Trinity 7

BRUNSWICK – Kevin Mullins scored the game-winning goal at the 2:35 mark in the second overtime as Bowdoin escaped with an 8-7 win over Trinity in a men’s lacrosse game on Saturday.

Connor Fitzgerald and Chris Eaton scored two goals apiece for Bowdoin (10-4). For Trinity, Joe Cortese scored a pair of goals.

Bowdoin’s Ryan Hurd netted the game-tying goal at the 4:21 mark unassisted.
