50 Years Ago, 1955

Workers in the five plants of the Bates Manufacturing Co. return to work this morning their two week strike at an end. Settlement of the strike came formally Sunday afternoon when employes at mass meetings approved the terms agreed to by General President Emil Rieve of TWUA and President Herman D. Ruhm Jr. of Bates for a three-year contract. Although all Bates plants will be back in operation today, the strike continues at the Continental Mills in Lewiston and at the Pepperell Manufacturing Co. plants in Lewiston and Biddeford.

Local schools ranked first among the winners in the annual State Baton Twirling Contest held at Lewiston Armory Saturday in conjunction with the Le-Ba-Boc Fair, sponsored by the Lewiston Bahd Booster Club.

25 Years Ago, 1980

Boston officially launched a summer long celebration of its 350th birthday Thursday when several hundred people consumed a seven-layer, 7,000-pound, 15-foot-high, red-white-and-blue cake. The concoction, complete with three miniature water fountains and dancing cherubs, was hauled to City Hall Plaza in a 2½-ton National Guard cargo truck.

Last Sunday Mark Gendron became Mister Maine 1980 in competition at the Waterville National Guard Armory where Mark was representing Lewiston’s Silver Gym.

Mark, a 1978 graduate of LHS now employed by Gendron and Gendron Construction, has been competing since 1976 and has won several titles.
