LOCKE MILLS – Jackson-Silver Post, American Legion, Auxiliary met on April 21 when it was reported that five members had attended the monthly county council meeting in Rumford.

Past county commanders and presidents were honored following a banquet. Among Jackson-Silver. Installation of the new council officers followed and Honey Bailey became vice president and Olive Risko is, for the 12th time, treasurer.

Jamie Hastings and Nancy Grover are looking for two girls to attend Girls State in June and the post will sponsor a boy to Boys State. They are also looking for applicants for scholarships.

Meaghan Goodrich has been chosen to be the Poppy Girl this year to assist Vera Cross in distributing the poppies, which are a symbol of the heroics of the World War I veterans in Flanders Field. Goodrich is the granddaughter of member Marianna Fifield.

It was voted to sponsor member Pam Rugg, who is a member of the Christian Motorcyclists group, when they ride in the near future for their annual gifts to charities.

Dues were received from three members. There are two members who have not yet renewed and their due would make the unit one above the total of last year, which was 121.

Installation of officers will take place on Thursday, May 5, with Honey Bailey becoming the new president; Helvi Cary, vice president; Olive Risko, secretary; Jamie Hastings, treasurer; Roianne Twitchell, chaplain; Rowena Dunham, historian; Irene Redman, sergeant-at-arms. Executive Committee members will be Vera Cross, Sylvia Dunham and Crystal Lake.

Delegates to the State Legion and Auxiliary Convention at Augusta in June are Honey Bailey, Helvi Cary, Sylvia Dunham and Olive Risko, with Marianna Fifield as an alternate.

Other activities in May include the monthly supper/dance on May 10 when the Parisians will furnish the music. Supper will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by the dancing until 9:30. The price of $7 for adults and $3.50 for those under 12 includes a chance for door prizes. A 50/50 drawing is available.

On May 14 the unit will be joined by post members in an indoor/outdoor flea market/yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tables will be available for $5 for any who wish to sell their own items, and set-up can start at 7 a.m. that day. The unit will also accept donations of items to sell.
