FARMINGTON – A convicted sex offender who had been living in Chesterville until his arrest Saturday waived extradition to Massachusetts on Monday in 12th District Court.
Richard A. Barrett, 27, is wanted by Massachusetts State Police on a charge of failing to register as a high-risk sex offender, Maine State Police Detective Mark Lopez said.
Barrett was convicted of three counts of raping a child and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 in the mid-1990s, Lopez said.
Barrett is listed as being convicted of the charges in 1996 on the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry. The registry board classifies Barrett as a high-risk offender.
A member of the Massachusetts State Police’s violent fugitive apprehension division informed Lopez that Barrett was possibly living in the Chesterville area, the detective said.
Lopez and Franklin County Sheriff’s Department Detective David St. Laurent conducted surveillance Friday and Saturday on Chesterville Hill Road.
The detectives were watching two residences, Lopez said, and saw Barrett traveling from one residence to the other in a vehicle.
Barrett was staying with his girlfriend and their infant son at her home at 433 Chesterville Hill Road, Lopez said.
Barrett was arrested on a Maine charge of being a fugitive from justice, Lopez said.
Massachusetts police are expected to come to take custody of Barrett on Wednesday. He is being held at the Franklin County Detention Center in Farmington.
