LIVERMORE FALLS – Residents, business representatives and those who travel the state highways through Livermore Falls are being sought to attend a public hearing Wednesday to give input for a traffic planning study.

The study will assist the town in identifying traffic problems in downtown Livermore Falls, addressing the problems and finding possible solutions, said Joan Walton, a representative of the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments.

The public hearing is scheduled at 6 p.m. in the meeting room upstairs at the Municipal Building.

Livermore Falls voters passed a comprehensive plan in 2002, which covered an array of issues, and one of those issues was a high volume of truck traffic going through the downtown area on state roads.

Some of the issues are related to 90-degree angles on Main and Depot streets and Depot and Park streets, where Route 17 runs near the Chuck Wagon Restaurant and Ware-Butler, as well as three railroad crossings that cross Route 4 and Route 17 in the downtown area.

Trucks going around the 90-degree corner near the Chuck Wagon end up taking up both lanes when heading toward Jay.

Walton said Town Manager Alan Gove contacted her to conduct a study to see if there are ways to improve the traffic flow for vehicles and pedestrians.

The Maine Department of Transportation is paying for the planning study, which will be conducted by Walton.

AVCOG proposes to:

• Offer the town the opportunity to understand what options might be available to improve existing traffic conditions.

• Assist with prioritization of options for improvements.

• Review options to improve existing traffic conditions in the downtown.

• Develop prioritized recommendations for land-use issues the town should consider that might improve traffic flow through the downtown.

• Identify potential right-of-way issues the town and Department of Transportation should consider.

• Prioritize recommendations for changes the state should undertake to improve traffic conditions in the downtown.
