TURNER – Lloyd “Lodie” Libby, 73, a lifelong resident of Turner, passed away Wednesday evening, May 4, at his home, surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Nov. 19, 1931, in Turner, the son of Kenneth and Carolyn Hobbs Libby and attended the local schools.

On Dec. 30, 1950, he married the former Patricia Chicoine of Livermore Falls in Winthrop, having celebrated 55 years of marriage this past December.

In 1952, he served in the Korean War as an Army sergeant, fighting on the front lines.

Lodie owned and operated L & L Well Drilling for 28 years, and had been a substitute HCR mail carrier.

He was a dedicated and active citizen for the Town of Turner. He served as deputy fire chief from 1957 until 1961, later becoming its chief for 16 years.

It wasn’t just the fire department that benefited from his dedication and time, he served the community in many different ways throughout the years. In 1963, he became the town constable and held this office for 16 years. He also served on the town’s Budget Committee from 1975 until 1978, and was the town’s governance as a selectman from 1975 until 1977.

For his years of dedication to the Town of Turner, risking his safety for others and for his unselfish efforts in keeping the volunteer fire department a part of this community, his friends and neighbors dedicated the Town Report for April of 2005 to him.

He was a former member of the Nezinscot Masonic Lodge No. 101 of Turner.

Lodie enjoyed hunting, fishing, and going to the camp in Madrid with his close buddy, Roz Hamilton. He also looked forward to his morning coffee and socializing at McDonald’s in Jay.

He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, whose family and friends meant the world to him.

He will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

He is survived by his wife, Patty, of Turner; a daughter, Missy Libby, of Freeport; a son, Rock Libby and his wife, Ginny, of Hartford; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Libby, of Livermore; grandchildren, Wil Libby of North Turner, Kerri Libby of Watertown, Mass., Jessie Libby of Auburn, and Maygan Libby of Livermore; a great-grandson, Conner Gleason, of Watertown, Mass.; brothers, Kenneth Libby of Mobile, Ala., and Jack Libby and his wife, Judy, of Wilton; and Rhonda Chase and Kevin Libby, who made their home with Lloyd and Patty after their mother passed away; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Russell Libby, on March 22, 2002; and a brother, Jessie Libby.
