FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) – One of two men who kidnapped the wife of U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., and forced her to withdraw money from her bank was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison.
Christopher Forbes, 33, pleaded guilty in February to charges of robbery and abduction, Fairfax County, Va., prosecutors told The Washington Post. His accomplice, Michael Pierre, 27, also has pleaded guilty and will be sentenced next month.
Forbes and Pierre admitted to authorities that they drove to the Greggs’ neighborhood on Oct. 7, 2003, and sneaked into their house through the open garage door.
Forbes held Kathleen Gregg down while Pierre ransacked the house, prosecutors said. They took jewelry, credit cards, a silver platter, a $30,000 engagement ring and the senator’s golf clubs, but they wanted more.
Mrs. Gregg told police that she persuaded the men to drive her to her bank, where she would get them cash. They agreed.
She went into the bank and handed the teller a check for $5,000. The teller gave her $4,000, and she handed it to Pierre and then ran out through a side door.
Pierre turned and ran.
The two were arrested two days later in northern New Jersey after driving into an undercover police surveillance area.
