Community input sought
AUBURN – The Auburn Parks and Recreation Department wants the public’s input on how to improve the 325-acre Mount Apatite Park. A meeting on the issue is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at Hasty Community Center in Pettengill Park off Gamage Avenue.
The wooded city park is home to historic mineral resources, named after the mineral apatite found there. It has a multiuse trail system and a snowmobile club.
In the late 1980s, a study was commissioned to develop recommendations for park use. In the early 1990s a 5-kilometer multiuse trail was carved out of the landscape, among several other improvements.
“This park is famous among rock hounds around the world. The trails are some of the best mountain biking trails in the area and are also enjoyed by hikers and runners alike,” said Doug Beck, Auburn’s recreation superintendent. “But, we have never been able to fully realize the recommendations of the previous study. We hope that this meeting will begin to reinvigorate the interest in this park and how we can work with the community to make it even better.”
