To those who shop in Lewiston and also to those who pay taxes, I wish them good luck in the coming years. I hope the city doesn’t go bankrupt from Lewiston City Administrator Jim Bennett’s plans of using public funds to finance projects that should be done with private enterprise. Lewiston is fast becoming one large development corporation using taxpayers’ money.

An old saying goes something like this: Democracy’s free enterprise survives only if it is based on private investment. Mixing big business with government turns to disaster.

Mr. Bennett was pictured recently in the Sun Journal (April 29) speaking at a hearing and pushing for a local sales tax to finance the Bates Mill No. 5. If private investors are not interested in risking their money on a project, then it is probably not a good idea for the taxpayers of Lewiston to take that same risk.

It is time for someone to stand up and say to Mr. Bennett: “Enough is enough.” He is becoming a loose cannon with taxpayers’ money. If he wishes to become a developer, let him risk his own money.

I am not a resident of Lewiston, but I believe his tactics have far-reaching effects on surrounding communities.
