SAUGUS, Mass. (AP) – An 88-year-old man was seriously injured Sunday when he was struck by a pickup truck as he tried to cross a street in Saugus.
The driver told police that he never saw the elderly Saugus man, who was struck at 6 a.m. on Ballard Street, said Lt. Steve Sweezey.
“If he couldn’t see properly to see a pedestrian, he should be going slower than 30 miles per hour,” Sweezey said. “It was rainy. The road was wet. He said he didn’t see the pedestrian.”
Names weren’t immediately released. The pedestrian was taken to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
The driver, a 44-year-old Winthrop man, was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian and speeding (at a rate) greater than reasonable for existing conditions.
The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk, but he still had the right of way, Sweezey said.
The driver was not taken into custody. Saugus and State police are investigating.
