NORWAY – Any resident who would like to see their road improved may want to make an appearance at the next Norway Board of Selectmen meeting to state their case.

Town Manager David Holt said the town may ask voters this year to approve borrowing $700,000 to $1 million to step up road work over the next two years.

The issue was first raised at a selectmen’s meeting Thursday, Holt said, and he expects discussion to continue at the next regularly scheduled meeting May 19.

“What I’d like to see us do, sitting where I sit, is get caught up and do a better job” with road maintenance, he said.

Holt said Friday that the proposed 2005-06 town budget includes $270,000 for road work. He has suggested that voters at the annual town meeting be asked to consider a separate warrant article to borrow money for roads.

Big improvements, like the replacement of the Bridge Street bridge, will go on hold for the next few years so the town can do more general road work, Holt said.

In the meantime, the pavement is being replaced on Pearl and Deering streets. Sewer lines are being replaced there, and water lines probably will be as well, Holt said.

The in-town work is part of a $3 million project that started with work on Main, Water and Beal streets and Lake Road, Holt said. A $600,000 grant, contributions from the water district and other funds have helped cover the project total, along with about $1 million in taxpayer dollars, he said.

Small sections of Round The Pond Road and Crockett Ridge Road will be improved this summer as well, Holt said.
