GREENE – A special town meeting will be held June 13 to vote on changing the tax commitment date from June 27 to June 29.
The meeting will be at the Greene Volunteer Fire Department. The time has not been announced.
Town Manager Charlie Noonan said he is asking the town to make the change because all the information needed on town expenditures won’t be available until June 29.
The school budget will be voted on at 7 p.m. June 8 at the Leeds Central School.
“So we won’t know until June 8 what our total commitment is going to be,” he said. The special town meeting will be held at the Green Volunteer Fire Department on June 13.
Operators of the Allen Pond dam have asked selectmen to take it over and maintain the pond’s water level.
The board is asking the group to submit a more formal proposal that the town can use to decide the issue.
“The problem I see is that it takes the water level out of the hands of the pond property owners and puts it into the hands of politicians,” Chairman Ron Grant said. “Is that what they really want?”
Selectman Timothy Doyle said this issue would have to be decided by the town, and he would like to see a recommendation from the Conservation Committee.
“We don’t have funds to expend on it right now,” he said. “This may turn out to be a two-year project.”
Property owners in the Deer Run subdivision have agreed to meet May 15 to discuss issues to resolve road maintenance concerns.
Volunteer Fire Chief Bruce Tuft has stepped down, and Joe Brown has taken over the position. The board thanked Tuft for three years of dedicated service. He oversaw the new Fire Department building and recent engine purchases.
Randall Ray is taking over as full-time code enforcement officer Thursday.
Noonan said there were five strong candidates, but Ray had “that little something more.” The job pays $28,000 to start.
In memory of longtime resident and community activist Bob Cote, a moment of silence was held at the start of the meeting.
“He was a great man and will be missed a great deal,” Grant said.
