PARIS – Special Olympics athletes from towns throughout Oxford County will be on hand Thursday, May 12, for the fourth annual Oxford County Regional Special Olympics Training Day at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School’s Gouin Sports Complex in South Paris.

Competitors, ranging in ages from 6 to 60, from Casco, Hebron, Rumford, South Paris, Norway, West Paris, Harrison, Norway, Bridgton, Oxford, Fryeburg and Mechanic Falls, will be ready for action.

More than 100 athletes, 80 coaches and a host of volunteers will be present at the Special Olympics/Maine sanctioned event. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and opening ceremonies will kick off at 9.

The county-level training day allows athletes to sharpen their skills in the basic facets of Olympic Games. The competitors will demonstrate skills in running, walking and throwing challenges as well as standing and running long jumps.

Rain date is Friday, May 13. The public is invited to attend the competition.

The even helps prepare the athletes for the annual State Summer Games held at the University of Maine in Orono. This is the 37th year for the Orono event, scheduled from June 10 to 12.
