WATERVILLE (AP) – A 22-year-old man remained in critical condition following a barroom shooting that investigators said was apparently drug-related.

Jeremy Landry of Winslow was found about 1:10 a.m. Wednesday on the floor of the bar area of the Bob-In restaurant and lounge with a gunshot wound in the back, police said.

Landry has a lengthy police record, with 18 arrests in the past four years, according to Deputy Police Chief Joseph Massey, who said the shooting is a reflection of the city’s growing drug problem.

The shooting occurred as two groups of people at the Bob-In – apparently friends of Landry and friends of those who shot him – were fighting outside, police said.

Landry has refused to cooperate in the investigation, police said, and many of those questioned at the scene also offered little information to police.

Massey said police cautioned bar patrons not to take matters into their own hands.

“We have no doubt there are a number of people who know what went on and who shot this Landry kid, but some of them have outright told us, the police, that they are going to take care of this themselves,” he said.

There are no suspects in the shooting, but police are interviewing people to try to determine what happened.

“No one could really identify any shooter on the scene,” Massey said. “We called detectives in to help follow up on a number of interviews. The biggest obstacle was dealing with drunk people.”

Massey said his biggest concern is “we’ve got someone out there with a gun.”

Landry underwent surgery Wednesday at Thayer Unit, MaineGeneral Medical Center to remove the bullet from his back.
