The evidence in the suit of the Union Water Power Company against the city of Lewiston for $10,000 for the use of more water than the contracts allow for the pumping and electric light stations, will be taken before Justice Savage at the court house, Auburn, Monday and Tuesday.

50 Years Ago, 1955

That day is here again. According to the calendar it’s Friday, the 13th. Superstitious folks, and there are a lot of them, believe nothing except bad luck can come to them this sixth day of the week, especially if they got up from the wrong side of the bed this morning. And there are other folks who’ll purposely walk under a ladder and cross the path of a black cat, trying to prove to themselves that there’s absolutely nothing to the superstition. Anyway, this is the day and now you know about it.

The first steps in the paving of the 63-mile Maine Turnpike’s Portland to Augusta extension started this week at Gray. Work on the $55,000,000 extension will be in full swing next week after the winter lull, as contractors strive to meet the October 1 completion date.

25 Years Ago, 1980

The prime lending rate dropped to 16½ percent at some major banks Monday, reflecting a steep drop in the demand for business loans as the economy sinks into a recession. The 16½ percent level is the lowest since late February, when the prime began an upward surge that peaked at 20 percent in early April. Since then, the rate has been on decline.
