RUMFORD – At least five people want a seat on the Board of Selectmen, and two have filed papers for SAD 43 directors.

Five people returned nomination papers for one of two selectmen’s seats by Friday afternoon. Town Clerk Jane Giasson said candidates have until 4 p.m. Monday to file.

The seats held by Selectmen James Peterson and Robert Bradley expire June 14. Peterson, a nine-year veteran of the board, has decided not to run. Bradley, a retired firefighter who lives on Oxford Avenue, is seeking a fifth, three-year term.

Also running for one of the two seats are: Mark Belanger, 39 Holyoke Ave.; Greg Buccina, 327 Route 232; Joseph Martineau, 742 Prospect Ave.; and Joseph Roberts, 220 Route 108. Bruce Barry, a call force firefighter, has also taken out nomination papers but has not returned them to the town office.

Belanger is the organist at St. Athanasius and St. John Catholic Church and a self-employed carpenter. Martineau is retired and serves as the commander of the local American Legion. Buccina made an unsuccessful run for a seat on the board a few years ago. He works for NewPage Corp. and is a member of the River Valley Growth Council. Roberts is the president of the Moontide Water Festival Committee and is a property and chiropractic manager.

SAD 43 director Tracey Higley and Chris Dickson are not seeking re-election.

Giasson said Ed Flynn, a former longtime SAD 43 board member, and Richard Gauvin, a child protective worker who ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the board two years ago, have taken out nomination papers but have not returned them.

Returning papers for another three-year seat on the Board of Assessors is incumbent Brian Gagnon of 699 Penobscot St. Ron Russell of 278 Isthmus Road, is running unopposed to complete the final year of Craig Chamberlain’s term. He recently resigned.

Voting takes place June 14.
