JAY – The School Committee voted Thursday to eliminate two federally-funded positions and create another to support a new math program in 2005-06.

Superintendent Robert Wall said Friday that a Title 1 reading teacher’s position and a Title 1 math education III position will be eliminated because Jay’s federal Title 1 funding is being cut by $32,000 in the next school year.

The school system is increasing the emphasis on math as it adapts a new standards-based math program called Every Day Math, Wall said Friday.

The School Department would still have three Title 1 reading teachers who will continue the “great work” that staff has been doing on reading, Wall said.

The focus over the last several years has been on improving students’ reading levels so all students would be reading at grade level by the end of third grade.

The new math program includes a better scope and sequence and standards to help students move in a pattern that is good for them, Wall said.

“It not only adds consistency,” Wall said, “it adds learning standards and scope and sequence.”

Wall said he would meet with members of the Jay Education Association to discuss the impact of eliminating the positions.
