There are Mainers who do not share the opinion that we are debating a “nonissue” on equal rights (May 6). The recently passed equal rights amendment will impact the people and businesses of Maine.

The April 29 edition of the Sun Journal ran a story, in the Maine & New England section, about a father in Lexington, Mass., who requested school officials remove his 6-year-old son from discussions about homosexuality in school. School officials refused and had him arrested for trespassing.

I am not anti-gay or homophobic. However, it is obvious to me that there are legislators in Augusta who are not representing all the people of Maine.

Don’t be fooled. We are not talking about civil rights being denied to a minority group. We are talking about special rights that will subjugate all Mainers to an ideology they may not agree with.

The Unitarian Church is not the only entity that embraces inclusion rather than judgment. The Apostle John said of Jesus Christ, “For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world: but that the world through him might be saved.” John 3:17.
