FARMINGTON – Public safety officials are planning fund-raisers for the Special Olympics summer games slated next month.
Organizer and Farmington police officer Sgt. Shane Cote said Tuesday that officials hope to raise about $4,500 this year, topping last year’s total by about $500.
And they’re off to a good start.
Six police officers participated May 6 in “Tip-a-Cop” at the Granary, where they waited on and bused tables. They earned about $1,000, Cote said.
The next event will take place Memorial Day weekend, he said. On Saturday, May 28, public safety workers and Special Olympians will pump gas at the Irving Big Stop on Wilton Road. The company agreed to donate 5 cents for every gallon of gas sold from Saturday through Monday, May 30. Seventy stores throughout the state will be participating, according to Cote.
On June 25, police will be perched on the roof of Dunkin’ Donuts on Wilton Road to raise yet more money for athletes. Starting at 9 a.m., officers will sit atop the doughnut shop one hour for every $100 they collect in a bucket they will lower to donors. They hope to raise another $1,000 that day, Cote said.
Raffle tickets for a 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle valued at $20,000 will also be on sale there, he said. Tickets will be on sale all summer, with a drawing to be held in October.
Police and other public safety employees will help initiate the games with the annual Torch Run on June 9. The summer games will be held June 9-12 at University of Maine in Orono.
