I am writing in reference to the “people’s veto,” which is designed to overturn the state budget. I am concerned that people will feel pressured to sign onto a petition while at the grocery store and not understand how disastrous the consequences could be as a result.

Our own Sen. Peggy Rotundo worked tirelessly to come up with a budget that is fair, and the “people’s veto” will uproot the hard work that has been done to deliver a budget that will sustain vital programs and help Maine’s economy grow.

The “people’s veto” will mean major cuts to education, health care, children’s insurance and countless other programs we rely on every day.

I simply cannot see how reworking the budget and making those cuts puts us ahead.

If people find themselves looking at this petition with a pen in their hand, I would ask them to seriously consider the millions of dollars that will be taken, not only from them, but their family, friends and neighbors.
