LEWISTON – Stanley P. Dennett, 91, of Dixfield, died Saturday evening, May 14, at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, after a brief illness. His sons were at the bedside with their father as he peacefully passed away.

He was born Feb. 21, 1914, in Augusta, a son of Leon P. and Evelyn (Milliken) Dennett. He attended Augusta schools and graduated from Cony High School in 1932.

He joined the Maine Army National Guard in 1939 and was activated with the 103rd Regiment of the 43rd Infantry Division in 1942. He served for three years in the South Pacific Theatre in New Zealand, Guadalcanal, Russell Islands, Rendova, New Guinea, Luzon in the Phillipines, and Northern Solomon Islands. He was discharged in 1945 with several medals, including the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star.

He was married to Evelyn Paquin, also of Augusta, on Oct. 28, 1945. They made their home together in Dixfield and were very happily married for 55 years. He served as the postmaster of the Dixfield Post Office for 25 years and retired in 1979.

He was a member of the Dixfield Congregational Church for many years. He enjoyed gardening, home maintenance and reading. In recent years, he was a very frequent visitor to the Dixfield Library and enjoyed a wide range of reading materials.

He is survived by two sons, Stephen Dennett of Dixfield, and Douglas E. Dennett, M.D., and his wife, Sharon, of Essex, Vt.; three grandchildren, 1st Lt. David Dennett, currently stationed at Fort Eustis, Va., recently returned from one year in Iraq, Sarah Dennett, living outside Salt Lake City, Utah, and Kathryn Dennett, a student in Portland, Ore. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, throughout the U.S., including Scott and Jamie Dennett, Dixfield.

He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn, on Feb. 1, 2000; and his five brothers and two sisters.
