LIVERMORE – The advertisement was very tempting. In it, a pair of contractors offered to build garages for $14,000 and they promised the best workmanship available.
The Attorney General’s Office has a different opinion. Investigators there say Mark Smith and David Blais do shoddy work and that the pair sometimes fails to complete the project altogether.
On Friday, the Attorney General’s Office filed court papers under Maine’s Unfair Trade Practices Act against Smith and Blais, who operate as CBS Enterprises.
“We have received a dozen complaints against CBS Enterprises from all around Maine,” Attorney General Steven Rowe said. “Consumer after consumer has charged Smith and Blais with either failing to complete the job or doing extremely poor work.”
The Attorney General’s Office is seeking an injunction that will prohibit Smith and Blais from doing any further home contracting work in the state.
Investigators said many of the customers claiming to have been bilked by CBS Enterprises responded to ads that promised: “This is the best built garage going.”
In Maine, home contractors are not regulated.
Rowe advises that people ask for references before hiring a contractor. He also asked that anyone with complaints against CBS Enterprises contact the Attorney General’s Office at (800) 436-2131 or by e-mail at [email protected].
