SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Kelly Godsey placed first in the women’s discus and hammer throws to pace Bates to a third-place finish in the 2005 ECAC Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Monday.

While Godsey was performing her magic, the men’s 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams ran well in tandem to lift the Bobcats to a sixth-place finish.

The Bates women scored 38 points in a field of 50 teams, with Oneonta College finishing first with 48. Godsey tossed the discuss 50.75 meters and the hammer for 62.82 meters to pick up 10 points in each event. Senior Karissa Carey helped the Bobcats with a 49.16-meter toss in the hammer throw for an six additional points.

Bates Junior Kathleen Nugent pitched in with a third-place finish in the heptathlon for six points, while sophomore Kathryn Moore collected another six with a third-place 11:07.19 finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Louise Duffus led Bowdoin to a 17th-place ranking with superb performances in the shot put, discus and hammer throws. She notched all 18 of the Polar Bears’ points.

Bates junior Dan Johnson ran the 5,000-meter run in 15:17.73 for fourth place to collect five points, while senior Matt Daly finished sixth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:28.85 for three points.

Bowdoin received a first-place finish in the men’s pole vault from senior Jon Todd with a 4.52 meter performance. He recorded all 10 points for the Polar Bears to rank 28th overall.

Senior Scott Cooper tossed the hammer a distance of 54.92 meters to tally six points toward the Bobcats’ sixth-place finish, while Adam Macbeth helped improve the ranking with three points, running the 110 meter hurdles in 15.07 seconds.

Maine sweeps

ORONO – The University of Maine clinched a berth in the upcoming America East Tournament during a doubleheader sweep of Binghamton, 5-2 and 8-2, on Friday afternoon.

In Game 1, the Black Bears (30-16) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Aaron Izaryk singled up the middle to drive in Greg Creek.

Maine broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ryan Quintal started the rally with a single up the middle. Izaryk walked and Quintal advanced to second. Curt Smith singled to left field, scoring Quintal with the go-ahead run. Matt McGraw and Mike Ferriggi provided run scoring singles to account for Maine’s fourth and fifth runs.

Having already clinched a playoff berth, Maine was itching for a sweep in the nightcap as the Black Bears scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Binghamton got on the board with a lone run in the top of the second inning and had a fifth-inning run nullified by a Smith sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to score Joel Barrett.

Maine added to their 6-2 lead in the sixth. Ray Vallee singled down the left-field line and Joe Hough followed with his fifth home run of the season.

Brandeis 15, Bridgewater State 7

BRIDGEWATER, Mass – Bryan Lambert went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead Brandeis University to a 15-7 victory over top seeded Bridgewater State on Friday.

Lambert also recorded his 12th save. B.J. Belair also homered and finished with three RBIs for Brandeis (20-16). For Bridgewater, Sean White had two hits and an RBI and a run scored.

With the win, eighth-seeded Brandeis will now play Endicott.
