SALEM, Mass. – Lawrence J. “Larry” Kelley, 57, of Salem, died unexpectedly Thursday evening at Salem Hospital. He was the husband of the late Marie A. (Viger) Kelley, who died in 1993.

Born and raised in Rumford, he was the son of Bernice M. (Gaudet) Kelley of Rumford, and the late Wilfred H. Kelley. He was educated at St. Athanasius Elementary School and was a 1965 graduate of Stephen’s High School.

A decorated veteran, he served as a sergeant in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a Purple Heart recipient.

Following his discharge, he was employed briefly by Western Union Telephone and Telegraph, and later by Sylvania Lighting for a few years. In 1976, he began an 18-year career with the Cabot Corp. in Boston, and most recently was employed by Dick’s Sporting Goods of Danvers.

Mr. Kelley loved the outdoors and enjoyed frequent trips to the family camp in Maine known simply as C-Pond. When at camp, he would hunt deer and fly fish for trout. During these trips, he would carry a camera and take many nature photographs.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Kelley is survived by two daughters, Kimberly L. and her husband, Scott Jalbert, and Melissa J. and her husband. Richard Swan, all of Salem, Mass.; three grandchildren, Nicholas and Matthew Jalbert, and Brianna Swan, all of Salem; two brothers, William Kelley of Andover, and Kenneth Kelley of Rumford; three sisters, Anna and Cynthia Kelley of Rumford, and Jo Ann Frechette of Largo, Fla.; many nieces and nephews; and a special companion, April Maselli of Quincy.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert L. Kelley.
