LIVERMORE FALLS – William Taylor Lufkin, 88, a resident of Bemis Street, Livermore Falls, died Saturday, May 21, at his home following a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Livermore Falls on June 24, 1916. He was the second child and only son of Carl Hall and Martha Taylor Lufkin. He graduated from Livermore Falls High School in 1936. A year later he was hired as a laborer at International Paper Company’s Otis Mill.

In 1942, he was drafted by the United States Army, and was trained as an airplane mechanic in Boston and Philadelphia. He was stationed in Keflavik, Iceland where he was placed in charge of a crew of four mechanics and was eventually promoted to the rank of sergeant.

After being discharged in 1945, he returned to work at the Otis Mill.

In 1954, he married Geraldine Lothrop of Wilton.

In 1967, he transferred to International Paper’s Androscoggin Mill, and shortly after, he was promoted to shift foreman of No. 3 finishing room and super calendars. He retired on July 1, 1980, after 43 years with International Paper Comp.

In his retirement, he was active in the Democratic Party and the Livermore/Livermore Falls Historical Society. He was also a member of the Quarter Century Club of International Paper Comp.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine of Livermore Falls; a son, John Lufkin of Randolph; and two sisters, Martha Lufkin of Livermore Falls, and Elizabeth Lufkin of Farmington.

He was predeceased by a sister, Carla, in 1925.
