JAY – A Union woman remained in serious condition Monday at a Lewiston hospital after the car she was driving Sunday struck a van at routes 4 and 17 in north Jay.
Both Bertha Fryman, 81, and her husband, Ervin Fryman, 74, of Union, were injured in the collision, Jay police officer Richard Caton IV said Monday.
Bertha Fryman was traveling east on Route 17 and went through the stop sign at the intersection, Caton said. Her car struck the driver’s side front of the van driven by Duane Burbank, 56, of Jay, who was traveling north on Route 4, Caton said.
Jay firefighters extricated the Frymans from their car, Caton said.
Bertha Fryman complained of chest and leg pain, and had some broken bones, Caton said. She was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. She was listed in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday afternoon.
Ervin Fryman suffered facial lacerations and had stitches, Caton said, and was taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. He was admitted to the hospital and released Monday, Caton said.
Neither one of the Frymans was wearing a seat belt, he said.
“They probably wouldn’t have as bad of injuries if they had seat belts on,” Caton said.
NorthStar ambulance medics checked Burbank out, Caton said, but he didn’t go to the hospital. Burbank’s passenger, Devin Boyd, 16, of Phillips was uninjured, Caton said.
Both vehicles were totaled, he said.
“They hit hard,” Caton said.
