GREENE – Some taxpayers in Greene may see some relief this year, thanks to the Homestead Exemption and a draft school budget of $181,000 less than this year. However, Town Manager Charlie Noonan estimates a 20-cent increase to the mill rate bringing the figure up to approximately $18.50 per $1,000 valuation.
“We won’t know the mill rate for sure until after the school budget is voted on,” Noonan said. That vote will take place at 7 p.m. on June 8 at the Leeds School.
Selectmen voted Monday on the wording of the six articles that will appear on the warrant for a June 13 special town meeting.
Noonan said he is asking the town to vote in favor of changing the tax commitment date from June 27 to June 29. The problem with keeping the original date, he said, is that it will not comply with the Homestead Act, since it goes into effect June 29. To set a commitment date before that date could produce wrong figures, and taxes would be wrong, he said.
Among the articles to be voted on, taxpayers will have a choice of what is to be done with the appropriated $4,000 that has been earmarked for stone repair. The town may choose to spend the entire sum on stone repair or use some to pay the shortfall on cemetery maintenance from the past year.
This would still allow for some stone repair and prevent the need of dipping into surplus, said selectmen Kevin Mower. The meeting will be held at the Volunteer Fire Department at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 13. The building will be open prior to the meeting for residents to register.
