AUBURN – Ten days after the Zimmermans open their Munroe Inn Restaurant to the public on June 1, they’ll be hosting an entirely different crowd.
On June 11, a film crew from HGTV’s “If These Walls Could Talk” is due to arrive and tape an episode featuring the historic Munroe house. The cable station’s program features interesting houses from around the country. It picked the Munroe home after the Zimmermans responded to the program’s search for unique homes in Maine.
“They were particularly interested that the house was purchased by a woman,” said Connie Zimmerman.
The home, built in classic Queen Anne Victorian design, was owned by Maria Munroe, the widow of a wealthy businessman who made a fortune in the shoe industry. After his death, she wanted to have an in-city home that could be a showpiece.
She hired W.R. Miller, a prominent local architect, to design the home, which at the time had many modern features such as an intercom between the porch and upper floors and a central vacuum system. The home’s original woodwork, fireplace tiles and slate roof are intact.
“The integrity of the house has been maintained,” said Zimmerman. “A lot of heart has been invested in it.”
The Zimmermans have the original blueprints of the home, which show a special “cider room” in the carriage house, which was rumored to be where Maria’s son, Horace, made his “spirits.” A previous owner found a secret space under the third-floor floorboards that was filled with old liquor bottles, said Zimmerman, who loves the house’s rich history.
“We’re the caretakers for the moment,” she said. “The house had a great run before us and I’m sure will go on after us as well.”
