WEST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – A 6-year-old kindergartner allegedly kidnapped by her aunt outside a West Haven school Wednesday was found safe about five hours later by a state trooper who stopped a car described in an Amber Alert, authorities said.

Sgt. J. Paul Vance, a state police spokesman, said Brittnay Scott was in a car traveling south on Interstate 95 in Greenwich when the trooper spotted the vehicle.

The girl was unharmed. She and the occupants of the car were taken to the state police barracks in Bridgeport, Vance said.

West Haven Police rescinded the Amber Alert they had issued for Brittnay at 12:45 p.m. Investigators believe she was taken by her aunt, Nicky Somers.

“She had just gotten off the bus for afternoon kindergarten,” Officer Angelo Moscato said.

Somers allegedly approached the girl and said she had a note to take her.

“She stated to the bus driver that she was the child’s aunt, and that she was taking the child to a dentist,” said West Haven Police Chief Russell.

Before anyone could verify that, Moscato said, Somers put the girl in the car and drove off.

Police believe the woman may have been heading for Palm Bay, Fla., where Brittnay’s mother lives. Police were also looking Brittnay’s mother, Jacqueline Somers.

She and the girl’s father, Matthew Scott, have been in a custody battle for several years, Kniehl said. He said it is unclear who has custody of the child.
