PARIS – The town is considering a proposal to ban the use of all tobacco products as well as alcohol in its parks and recreation areas.
At a Monday meeting of the Paris Board of Selectmen, Parks and Recreation Director Joseph Cormier presented the board a resolution that would prohibit the use of any tobacco products in such areas.
“We’re not looking to have people arrested or fined or anything if they do smoke,” he said. “My feeling is, as rec director, is to provide areas that promote healthy activities.”
The board asked Cormier to make some changes to the resolution, which was based on a document used by the town of Norway.
Selectman Raymond Glover said he would like to see a specific list of all parks and recreation facilities that would be covered if the resolution is adopted. He pointed out that there may be some areas that people do not realize are town-owned.
Cormier said he would make some changes to the resolution and also include a provision banning the use of alcohol.
He said tobacco-free zones are being promoted by Healthy Oxford Hills, which would provide signs the town could post if the resolution is adopted.
Smoking already is prohibited in the town’s offices and work facilities, Selectman Bruce Hanson said.
