AUBURN – Lewiston-Auburn Community Little Theatre is holding auditions at 7 p.m. June 6 and 7 at Great Falls Performing Arts Center, 30 Academy St. for its summer production of “Fiddler on the Roof.”

The show dates are Aug. 18 to 28. Paul G. Caron is the director.

Based on the short stories of Sholem Aleichem, the musical is set in the small village of Anatevka, Russia, in 1905, and focuses on Tevye, a dairyman who’s trying to eke out a living. He struggles with holding onto his beliefs, his personal relationship with God and his culture while living in a czarist regime.

In the spirit of the show, Community Little Theatre is looking to have a multicultural cast. People of different faiths, races and ethnicity are invited to audition as well as people who are physically challenged.

This is a timeless work of art, which reflects the struggles that people of many cultures have endured and continue to endure.

It is an excellent opportunity for people in the community to share their talents, whether those talents are in acting, singing, speaking or dancing, said Caron.

The theater group is also encouraging backstage crew working in costumes, make-up, set construction and decor, properties and stage crew to share in the production. “Like the people of Anatevka, we can come together in making this a memorable event,” said Caron.

All auditioners must bring their own sheet music with a song from the show or from another Broadway musical and use the accompanist available. All auditioners must demonstrate minimal stage movement.

People auditioning for the parts of the daughters, Russian dancers, and bottle dancers should have dance experience.

The cast is huge; a complete listing of the parts is on the theater’s Web site at laCLT.com. The major roles are Tevye, the milkman, who needs to be a strong singer and solid dancer; Golde, Tevye’s wife, a strong singer; Tzeitel, their oldest daughter; Hodel, the second daughter; Chava, third daughter; Motel, the tailor; Perchik, a student; Yente, the matchmaker; and Lazar Wolf, the butcher. There also is a huge assortment of characters of all ages from the village.
