AUBURN – Police in Lewiston and Auburn will join officers from around New England on Saturday, May 28, pumping gas and cleaning windshields to benefit Special Olympics athletes.

In Auburn, cops will carry squeegees instead of night sticks at the Irving Mainway at upper Court Street and Minot Avenue.

In Lewiston, officers will be fueling cars at the Irving on Main Street in that city.

Both groups will be out between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Over Memorial Day weekend, Irving will donate 5 cents for every gallon of gas sold to the Law Enforcement Torch Run, an event and fund-raiser for Special Olympics.

In recent years, Irving and police from around the country have raised $320,000 for the Special Olympics, according to a company fact sheet.

The gas pumping event is one of several leading up to the Torch Run, during which police officers around the state will carry the Torch of Hope from one city to the next.

In the Twin Cities, the torch is expected to be passed from Auburn cops to Lewiston police officers the afternoon of June 8 on the Longley Bridge.
