I have just finished reading and enjoying the article about Nikole Lemay’s high school project on the decline of Maine dairy farms. I would like to share something else that saddens me. When I picture our beautiful state of rolling hills, lakes and trees, I picture the many homes with farm stands by the street selling vegetables, Christmas wreaths and other products.
Our farm family has a stand in Wales, selling eggs, plants and soon vegetables. In just the last week, vandals have broken and knocked over two mailboxes and twice emptied the jar of money we have trustingly left. We are an honest state; everyone trusts their neighbor to leave money and take change. We all hate to see change come that we have no control over. Surely honesty and kindness don’t have to disappear, too.
