LEWISTON – Lewiston police arrested two Midwestern fugitives at a local bus station Saturday night after one of the men allegedly fought with an officer and tried to take his gun.

Patrol officers Eric Syphers and Justin Kittredge came upon Greg Alan Wilson, 24, and Ronald Heiny, 20, at the Greyhound Bus Station around 8 p.m. Saturday. The officers stopped to question the men.

“Something didn’t seem quite right. A sixth sense officers get sometimes,” said Lt. Tom Avery.

Officers soon discovered that Heiny was on probation for conspiring to commit murder and was wanted on burglary charges in Indiana. When they turned their questions to Wilson, he became agitated and evasive, Avery said.

Officers tried to detain him. He started to fight and tried to take the weapon from one of them, according to police. The men scuffled before officers got Wilson under control. He never got possession of the gun.

After the arrest, police discovered that Wilson, a felon with white supremacy tattoos, was also wanted in Illinois on burglary charges.

He told police he fought the detainment because he was carrying a small amount of marijuana and he thought that was a felony in Maine. Marijuana possession is a felony in Indiana. In Maine, possession of tiny amounts of marijuana is an infraction punished only by a fine.

Neither the officers nor the fugitives sustained any serious injuries, Avery said, and no one was taken to the hospital.

The men were taken to the Androscoggin County Jail and will face extradition to Indiana. Police said they worked construction here.
