LISBON – You can register now for the annual Moxie Festival river race, which will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 10.
Chief Worumbo’s seventh annual Androscoggin Fun River Race, “Path of the Paddlers,” is dedicated to the Native Americans who preceded our time on the Androscoggin and its shores.
Registration forms can be downloaded at www.moxiefestival.com, or picked up at Faye’s Barbershop in Lisbon Falls.
It’s a 6-mile course, mostly flat, possibly with Class 2 rapids, depending on the water level. There are 10 Categories.
All extra-light-weight canoes designed for racing, war canoes and doubles kayaks must register under the Weekend Warriors category. Other categories are Male & Female Kayak, Solo F Canoe, Solo M Canoe, Tandem Males, Tandem Females, Tandem Mixed, Plus 100 (ages of paddlers in the boat must total more than 100 years), Family (parents or guardians and their children under the age of 18).
First-, second- and third-place prizes awarded in each category.
Registration is $12 per person and includes picnic lunch and beverages at the race end for all registrants.
A picnic lunch is provided only to the paddlers, but there are several sandwich shops and ice cream stands less than a mile from the race finish for other family members.
T-shirts go only to those who pre-register before Wednesday, July 6.
Race day registration starts at 9 a.m.
There have been more than 100 paddlers for the past six years of the race, so it is wise to get there in time to jockey for launch space and position.
All paddlers must wear an approved personal flotation device.
The race starts at the Durham Boat Launch on Route 136 near the Durham-Auburn line. Take-out and race finish is on Route 196 in Lisbon Center at the Sabattus River Boat Park.
Shuttle service will be available after the awards ceremony.
Awards are presented as soon as the last paddler crosses the finish line.
