Dusty Lavoie, 22, son of Dennis and Lynn of Lisbon, has been named the Valedictorian of the 2005 graduating class at the University of Maine in Orono.

Lavoie graduated Salutatorian at Lisbon High School in 2001, then took a year off from his academic pursuits to get married and start a family. After relocating to Old Town, he began classes at the University of Maine in the fall of 2002, originally majoring in journalism.

He changed his major to secondary English education and obtained the credits for his degree in seven semesters over three years.

Lavoie began student teaching last fall, and in January of this year was hired as a full-time English teacher at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield. He plans to teach there this fall, and to live on campus with his wife, Casey, their 4-year-old son, Bradley, and newborn baby girl, Kylie. Lavoie has aspirations to obtain his master’s and doctorate in the near future.
