JAY – An 8-year-old Jay boy remained in critical condition Monday in a Portland hospital after his bike and a pickup truck collided Saturday evening on Davis Road, off Route 133 in Jay, police Sgt. Charles Keene said Monday.
The boy, whose name was not released, suffered head injuries, Keene said. He was not wearing a helmet, he said.
The boy was riding his bike out of a driveway when it and a truck driven south toward Wilton by Scott Bennett, 36, of Jay, collided, Keene said.
The boy was thrown to the side of the truck and his bike was under the front of it, Keene said.
NorthStar ambulance personnel, Jay officer Troy Young and Jay firefighters assisted at the scene and set up a landing zone for a medical helicopter.
The boy was flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland, Keene said, where he remained Monday.
“Speed was a factor” in the accident, Keene said, of Bennett.
Bennett was driving after suspension of his driver’s license and also had a warrant out for his arrest, Keene said. He was arrested and charged with operating after suspension in connection with Saturday’s accident, Keene said.
Bennett was taken to Franklin County jail in Farmington where he was released Saturday on $300 cash. He is scheduled to appear July 27 at 12th District Court in Farmington.
Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Aaron Turcotte was called in to reconstruct the accident, the sergeant said.
