OTISFIELD – The Otisfield Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at the Otisfield Town Office. The first order of business will be the election of officers, which was postponed from the society’s last meeting.
Jean Hankins of Otisfield will then present “Settling Oxford County: Maine’s Revolutionary War Bounty Myth.”
Hankins’ research was originally done in preparation for this year’s Oxford County Bicentennial Celebration.
“One of the things I was interested in,” she said, “was why the first settlers came to this area of Maine in the first place. My mother-in-law, who was born in Otisfield, always said that her ancestors, like many others, came here because they received free land because they were Revolutionary War veterans. This is an intriguing story, but I soon began to wonder if it was really true.” Hankins’ paper will be published in a special Oxford County Bicentennial edition of Maine History.
The public is welcome.
