ROXBURY – The condition of a 10-year-old girl, who was reported in critical condition Monday with burns from a morning fire at her father’s Roxbury Pond camp, remained unknown Tuesday.
The girl’s condition is unknown because officials do not yet know her name. Hospitals do not release information to the media about people brought in for treatment without a name.
But, Med-Care Ambulance Director Dean Milligan in Mexico said Tuesday afternoon that he believes she was flown by medical helicopter to the Boston Shriners Hospital from Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
The girl’s father, Tom Brackett of Brownfield, who was also burned while rescuing his daughter and 13-year-old son, was listed in fair condition late Tuesday afternoon at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Arthur Taylor, who lives across from the Brackett camp with his wife, Cathy, said Tuesday afternoon that a Brackett family member had called him earlier, saying that the girl had sustained burns to 30 percent of her body, not 51 percent.
The Taylors drove Brackett and his daughter to Rumford Hospital before emergency officials arrived, Cathy Taylor said Tuesday.
Med-Care then took the burn victims to Turner, where they were met by medical helicopter and taken to the Lewiston hospital.
The 6:15 a.m. fire at the one-story camp off Byron Road remained under investigation Tuesday by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Fire investigator Chris Stanford said Monday that investigators needed to interview the father and the girl to determine how the fire began. He said it originated in the kitchen area.
Mexico Fire Chief Gary Wentzell said Tuesday that fire investigators did not find any accelerants at the scene.
Twenty-five firefighters from Andover, Byron and Mexico responded. The camp, which Wentzell said Brackett bought in February for $25,000, was a total loss.
