DIXFIELD – During a special meeting Wednesday afternoon, selectmen decided to hold off on hiring an interim town manager until their regular meeting on June 13.

Town Manager Nanci Allard leaves the post she has held for three and a half years today. She’ll begin a similar position in Vermont on Monday.

In the interim, selectmen and office staff plan to take care of day-to-day duties. Board Chairman Eugene Skibitsky said residents may call him or any of the other selectmen, if necessary.

Selectman Montell Kennedy, whose term expires June 14 and who isn’t running again, said the town has operated without a town manager in the past. He made the motion to begin a search for an interim town manager and for the board to conduct routine matters.

Selectman Tony Carter said the board will talk with potential interim candidates between today and June 13.

Allard has also offered to be available by telephone, if needed. Skibitsky said possible interim candidates could be former selectmen, town department heads or someone from outside of the town. The interim person could be a volunteer or paid.

“We’re wide open,” he said.

The chairman said it could be two to six weeks before a permanent town manager is in place. In the meantime, the board plans to interview a candidate for the position this afternoon.

The annual town meeting also takes place at 6 p.m. today in Dirigo Middle School.
