FARMINGTON – Voters in SAD 9 face a $21.88 million spending package Tuesday in an all-day referendum in nine towns.

The figure represents a $588,316 increase, or about 2.8 percent over this year’s budget. However, the package represents a $153,575 decrease in the tax commitment for taxpayers, due to more state funding.

Voters have a 12-question referendum to consider Tuesday, June 7, at polling places in each town.

The $21.88 million proposal reflects higher costs of fuel oil, diesel fuel and health insurance. It also reflects reductions that include elimination of three teacher positions in kindergarten through grade eight, elimination of five education technicians in the special education program, and elimination of one bus driver custodial position.

SAD 9 anticipates receiving a state allocation of $12.2 million for 2005-06, which would be $751,351 more than 2004-05.

The proposed local assessment from the towns for 2005-06 is $8.75 million, a 1.72 percent decrease from last year’s $8.9 million.

Industry is the only town in the district that would see a higher tax assessment, and that is because of a higher state evaluation, officials said previously. The town’s assessment would increase by $11,968 to $642,816. That figure includes Industry’s share of adult education.

The adult education budget is $324,583, which reflects a $3,559 increase over the existing budget, but also represents a $225 decrease in the local allocation of $76,375 from district towns.
